I’ve been getting some requests to post a piece a wrote some time ago about steelhead flies. Seems fitting. I’m shooting and editing Skagit Master volume 3 and it’s all about steelhead flies, so here goes: Flies by Jeff Mishler These days, if an accomplished steelheader is also an accomplished fly tier, undoubtedly, their fly […]

DECAY by Jeff Mishler Decay—an imperceptible naturally progressive slumping of inanimate material that happens while you’re focused on something entirely more important, like fishing.

It’s hot. But the water is cool from a wet summer. The fish are here. Urban summer steelheading in the PNW is something I’ve avoided because I don’t like fishing around a ton of people, but we spent the day trying to flip that into touchable awesomeness. Amazing that with so many fish around, no […]

This is the season when we become lost in the routine of cast, swing, strip. The two handers are stashed, but for the switch rods. We turn them into distance casting tools where space behind is not an issue. The salmon we catch are eaters; food fish plain and simple.

Published in Fly Rod & Reel, Jan. 2009 STEELHEAD FLIES By Jeff Mishler The first steelhead fly that fell from my vice into my ten year old palm was a standard skunk tied on a 2x heavy Mustad, down turned eye, sproat, size four hook. The tail was an irregular clump of webby red neck […]

Thanks to Bob Van Dyk we are in the loop on this issue. Oregon State University just released a report blasting The Oregon Department of Forestry for using old science in their management plan of the Tillamook/Clatsop State Forest. Conservationists and other ESA advocates have been claiming this for a while. Finally the […]

You wouldn’t know it with the rain we continue to get. Fortunately, the fish are late, still coming in numbers and the crowds are off chasing bigger chrome stuff. It’s my favorite time of the year, this late spring thing. You have the river to yourself, and the fish cooperate if you can […]

I forgot how much movement marabou produces when the water is cold, off color and the current not too heavy. Fished these this weekend and love the look. JM

I was wondering how many of you Skagit Master fans would be interested in an HD/Blu Ray version of our shows. The best player for Blu Ray I’ve discovered is a Sony Play Station. So, if you have one of those or a Blu Ray player, are you game? The retail would be […]

The next 5 days I hope to be full of popping, skating, rushing rises, jumping fish and a big sigh of relief. We’re wrapping things up. As this schedule is winding down I’m realizing that I probably won’t have the DVD ready for release until the first week of October….Hope you can wait that long. […]

Starting this Wednesday. Finally! I spent Thursday and Friday on the North, and though the water conditions are great, I didn’t much sign of steelhead. One great toilet bowl flush around my skater and word from Howell that his client landed a nice fish that evening. 5 more days of shooting and we’re locking it […]
